Teen Symposium 2011

Teen Symposium 2011 - You Tube Video

Gathering over 260 freshmen, from fifteen high schools and having them spend a day together to develop leadership skills could provide an opportunity for energy, enthusiasm and introspection.  On February 8, Teen Symposium 2011 offered just that.

United Way Fox Cities and the YMCA of the Fox Cities sponsored the day to empower ninth graders to build better schools and communities through leadership development.  In addition over 30 upperclassmen from area high schools served as the small group facilitators.  The morning began with a powerful opening from United Way Youth Board Co-leader Marc Busko.  Marc encouraged the students to find their passion and do their best to make their high school years productive and enriching for themselves and their schools.  Liz Ho, another of the Youth Board leaders performed an original song that focused on the theme of "Be the Change."

A volunteer fair provided the opportunity for students to view various activities and organizations in the Fox Valley that need volunteers.  The afternoon featured speaker, Carl Olson.  Carl is a dynamic and inspiring speaker who is continually asked to return and present the keynote for the Teen Symposium.

The end of the day does not mean the end of Teen Symposium.  Outcomes include an action plan that can impact schools, agencies and the community at large.  Teen Symposium is an example of organizations collaborating to make the Fox Cities a great place for youth. United Way and the YMCA thank the Volunteer Center of East Central Wisconsin, Youth Go, and the Teen Symposium Planning Committee for their contributions in producing a meaningful experience for our future leaders.
