Stamp Out Hunger

This Saturday, May 10th the National Association of Letter Carriers will be conducting the nation's largest one day food drive.
It is very easy to contribute - just
place your nonperishable food donations near your mailbox before
the letter carrier delivers the mail. Suggested items include
canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta,
peanut butter, rice or cereal.
All of the food that is collected is taken back to the postal station, sorted, and then delivered to our local food pantries. Pantry shelves filled up through winter-holiday generosity often are bare by late spring. And, with the end of the school year approaching, many families will be looking for more assistance because children will not have school lunches.
With one in six Americans either living at risk of hunger or not knowing where their next meal will come from, the Letter Carriers' Food Drive is just as important today as the first one was back in 1992. Feeding America, one of the partners of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, states on their website, "One of the most common misconceptions is the assumption that if someone is hungry, that means they do not have a job and are living on the streets. What most people don't understand is that anyone can experience hunger. It is a silent epidemic that affects over 50 million Americans."
In the Fox Cities we know that there is a need for food assistance. In 2013, our United Way 2-1-1 call center received more than 750 requests for help with food. Each year we are seeing those requests increase.
Please consider leaving a generous bag of food at your mailbox this Saturday. And if you have the opportunity, say thank-you to the letter carrier that is helping to collect over 74 million pounds of food nationwide.
United Way, AARP Drive to End Hunger, Publix, Campbell Soup Co., the U.S. Postal Service, National Rural Letter Carriers' Association, the AFL CIO, Valpak, Valassis, Uncle Bob's Self Storage, and Feeding America are national partners of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
