Over 120 students attended the Youth as Partners in Civic Leadership Conference.

Earlier this month, three Youth Board Students and I attended a youth conference called Youth as Partners in Civic Leadership (YPCL). Over 120 youth from all corners of our state attended YPCL to network, discover leadership traits, and learn how to create a stronger voice for the youth of Wisconsin.
During the first night of the conference, our United Way Fox Cities Youth Board students presented a breakout session called My Multicultural Self. We asked everyone to write down five identity descriptors that are unique to themselves. All of the students who participated were culturally diverse and were able to share a wide variety of beliefs, values, and behaviors. Great discussion followed about the meaning of culture, how culture can change, that culture can be learned, and how culture can influence our own leadership identity. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students and advisors, and I was so impressed by the depth of the discussion.
Throughout the rest of the conference, the students and I had the chance to participate in various breakout sessions, roundtable discussions and political event planning seminars. A session on Using Social Media to Build your Organization and Campaign was especially memorable. The workshop asked the question, “What is the best way to connect to social media audiences when using multiple platforms?” Answer: #HASHTAGS. Hashtags make it easy for people to find and follow discussions about brands, events and promotions. Our Youth Board students decided to come up with a hashtag to track all of our events, activities, projects! Drum Roll PLEASE: #UWFCYouthBoard.
We look forward to sharing the activities of our Youth Board, including our grants and volunteer projects. To keep up with our latest news, search for our hashtag on Facebook.
