We want to thank Post-Crescent Media for the article on our PATH for Students program as a follow up to the Kids in Crisis series. Through this in-depth series, the Post-Crescent has raised awareness of the growing need for youth mental health services and initiated community discussion. The series' exploration of how other states address youth mental health has given us food for thought as we search for creative ways to provide healing for our children.
Mental illness is unique in that there is still so much stigma around it, preventing individuals from seeking treatment. The recent local attention on mental health will help alleviate that stigma and encourage people to see it as any other illness that needs treatment.
We also want to thank the student at Appleton East High School, who, with the support of her family was willing to share her very personal story. We are hopeful that we can end stigma and improve access to mental health services because of the brave acts of our young people.
