"Books are a uniquely portable magic." -Stephen King

Books truly are magical. They challenge our imagination, provide us with knowledge, create new worlds to discover, and give us endless enjoyment. We want the children in the Fox Cities to have the opportunity to discover the wonderful world of books.

During a recent literacy kit packing event, our volunteers could not help but exclaim over the books we were assembling for kindergartners in the Appleton Area School District. Young and old were oohing and aahing over the selection of books. Favorite books from childhood brought back many memories. And of course, the moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas loved seeing the books they read to their children and grandchildren.

Getting books into the hands of our young readers is important. 90% of brain growth happens by age five. Research indicates that when children have quality early learning experiences they are 40% less likely to fall behind in school and 70% more likely to graduate from high school. (Source: Make Way for Books) Access to books is so important in the development of basic reading skills.

On November 29, which is #GivingTuesday, our United Way is asking the community to help us get more books into the hands of our young readers. A donation to our #GivingTuesday fund will buy books and United Way will distribute them. These will be new books that are age appropriate for young readers.

If you would like to help us you can:

  1. Spread the word by sharing, liking, and posting on Facebook and Twitter.
  2. Save the date and make your #GivingTuesday gift on November 29, 2016. Gifts will be matched dollar for dollar up to $500.

    $5 = 3 books
    $10 = 6 books
    $25 = 16 books
