The Cost to Raise a Child

I recently received one of those ubiquitous, inspirational slide shows over the internet. This one was about the cost to raise a child. It said that a recent government report estimated the average cost to raise one child to age 18, excluding college, is $160,140. That figure seemed low, and indeed I found a Department of Agriculture study that puts it well over $200,000. But like the message I received asked, “Does it really matter?”
Think about the priceless benefits we receive in raising our children. First, we get naming rights! Then, there are butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs, great excuses to finger paint, catch lightening bugs, go to Disney movies or simply wish upon a star.
We get a front row seat to history…the first step, the first ride without training wheels, the first time behind the wheel, the first date. We’re seen as heroes simply by soothing a boo-boo, scaring away monsters or helping to heal a broken heart. Things like these are priceless and the memories last a lifetime!
Love and enjoy your children; they’re the best investment we’ll ever make.
