Caps and Gowns

Contributor: Peter C. Kelly, President and CEO at United Way Fox Cities

Several years ago, I had the privilege of attending my son’s graduation from high school. There is always excitement in the air at graduation ceremonies. Students discuss future plans. Teachers smile and no doubt are grateful that the year is ending. Parents, grandparents, and friends of the graduates are all there to celebrate the accomplishments of the past four years.

The various speakers all have positive words of advice for the graduates. But as I listened and absorbed the activity around me, I couldn’t help but feel that the affirming messages to the graduates are really something we all need to hear. Explore new opportunities, strive to make our world better, and remember that friends and family will always be there to offer comfort and support.

One of the speakers quoted Albert Schweitzer when offering advice to his classmates, “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success.” It took well beyond my high school or college years to understand this…but I think I’m starting to get it.

Wishing you a happy summer.
