The power of a story is beyond measure. At United Way Fox Cities we are asked to share stories every day. It helps us all to identify with someone’s life, their needs, and their gratitude.
One of my favorite stories was sent to us by Partnership Community Health Center and gives us a glimpse of Roger’s life.
For over twenty years, Rodger had suffered with ongoing tooth pain. Most of the time he ignored it. It wasn’t until some of his teeth started to wiggle and fall out due to decay and gum disease that he decided it was time to get them checked out.
He went to a local commercial dentist and they told him it would be upwards of $7,000 to start the work and that didn’t include dentures. He did not have dental care offered through his job and that cost was way out of his price range. In talking to a friend, she mentioned the Partnership Dental Clinic as an option.
Rodger made an appointment and was enrolled in the sliding fee scale program, made possible by United Way Fox Cities, for his care. Over the course of a few months, he had multiple extractions and finally impressions for his dentures.
What an important day it was for him to get his smile back. On the day of the final fitting for the dentures, he brought the staff flowers and came to the appointment in a full suit, polished shoes, and a new haircut.
“Rodger, are you going somewhere after the appointment?” a team member asked. “Nope,” he said, getting my new teeth is one of the most important days of my life and I thought I should dress up for it!”
The power of a smile should never be underestimated and his care was truly life changing.
All of us at United Way Fox Cities thank you for supporting our work and making it possible for us to provide programs, grants and initiatives that create smiles every day for so many of our friends, neighbors, and families.
