Free on Saturday? Volunteer for Make A Difference Day!

Contributor: Susan Perri, Marketing and Communications Assistant at United Way Fox Cities

This Saturday, October 25th, millions of people across the nation will spend their day improving the lives of others by volunteering for Make A Difference Day. Make A Difference Day is the largest national day of community service and a great opportunity to LIVE UNITED.

Last year on Make A Difference Day, I had the privilege of taking photos at many of the sites that were hosting projects. In the morning, I followed Genia Lovett, (now retired) President/Publisher at Post-Crescent Media and Steve Broas, Vice President/Advertising at Post-Crescent Media, to Kaukauna where they worked up a sweat raking a resident's yard. It was humbling to see them serving their community in such a hands-on way. At Riverview Gardens, I saw great teamwork while volunteers (including United Way Emerging Leaders, staff and their families) helped with fall clean-up and constructed hoop greenhouses. I also went to Haven of Hope Day Care and St. Vincent de Paul where I witnessed teenagers scrubbing bathroom floors, cleaning out kitchen appliances, sorting items for sale, moving heavy furniture and being all-around extraordinary citizens. It was incredibly inspiring to witness neighbors helping neighbors all across the community.

Everyone is invited to volunteer for Make a Difference Day - it's not too late to get involved! The Volunteer Center of East Central Wisconsin and Post-Crescent Media are hosting a Make A Difference Day Kickoff Breakfast at Appleton Alliance Church (2693 Grand Chute Blvd, Appleton) from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Volunteers are invited to gather for the free breakfast, then carpool together to the volunteer sites. RSVP to attend the breakfast. If you would like to stay from 9:00 a.m. to noon for a community craft project, you can help make no-sew fleece blankets and greeting cards that will be donated to local organizations working with children in crisis and veterans. Volunteers are asked to bring two 1.5-yard pieces of no-pill fleece fabric for the blankets. RSVP to make blankets and cards. Looking for additional Make A Difference Day volunteer opportunities? Check out the Volunteer Center's website to sign up. Opportunities include pumpkin carving at the Emergency Shelter, helping with Youth Go's Haunted House, fall clean-up at Riverview Gardens and more…

It takes the whole community working together to create a better life for all. We invite you to be a part of the change and volunteer this Saturday!
