Several years ago, United Way Fox Cities began to partner with FamilyWize to offer a free prescription card. This unique national grassroots community initiative offering free prescription assistance to millions of Americans in partnership with United Ways is dedicated to reducing the cost of prescription medicine for individuals and families. To date, this partnership has saved a total of $619,284 for 7,124 people in the Fox Cities. The FamilyWize cards may be used by anyone in need and are provided free through United Way Fox Cities.

Prescription medicine is crucial for maintaining both physical and mental health, but the high costs often act as a barrier. People should not have to choose between taking their medication and paying for their next meal. The FamilyWize prescription savings program can make the difference in a patient obtaining the proper medicine and treatment. With the ongoing increase in efforts to effectively address mental health, United Way Fox Cities and the FamilyWize Community Service Partnership have helped local residents in the Fox Cities save $225,178 on mental health prescription medications individuals may not have otherwise been able to afford.

The average discount cardholders receive is 40% to 75% or more -- similar to what pharmacies give the largest insurance companies and employers. The FamilyWize-United Way Card requires no enrollment or activation. Program participants present this card to their pharmacists each time a prescription needs to be filled and discounts are automatically applied. The FamilyWize card is accepted at more than 60,000 pharmacies nationwide, including CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Kmart, Target and Walmart. This program can even be used to obtain savings on prescription drugs that are excluded by insurance plans or for medications no longer covered due to an insurance plan's maximum limits.
