Baby Basics 1

Contributor: Megan Biese, Marketing Specialist – Power Systems Division at Miller Electric Mfg. Co.
This summer, United Way Fox Cities Emerging Leaders (recommended for donors age 40 and under with annual giving of $500 or more) and Leadership Givers (people of all ages with individual or combined annual giving of $1,000 or more) from Miller Electric Mfg. Co. and ThedaCare collaborated on a Baby Basics Drive. We speak a lot about getting children off to a great start as part of our United Way efforts, so this seemed like a no-brainer, and who can say no to a baby? No one.
Throughout the drive, it was extremely humbling to know that some families struggle to buy basic baby items for their children. I think, at least for me, I realized how much I take for granted being able to walk into a store and buy items like this without worrying how I’m going to feed the rest of my family.
Baby Basics 2With the help of many who gave generously and volunteered, we were able to put together 165 baby basics kits. The kits were donated to Partnership Community Health and Mosaic Family Health, agencies that work to make sure members of our community have access to healthcare, regardless of their income level. I think the sheer volume of generous donations was the first overwhelming moment for me. When we had all the items sorted and we saw how many items were given, it showed how much Miller Electric Mfg. Co. and ThedaCare employees care about others and value the opportunity to give back.
The kits, which included diapers, wipes, bath care items, blankets/towels, bibs, safety items, and other assorted toys, pacifiers, etc. will be dispersed by the agencies to new and expectant parents. There were also many clothing donations and a few larger items (bathtubs, swings, etc.), which will be distributed based on need and as prizes for upcoming new mothers’ events. The reactions from the agencies we gave the kits to was the second overwhelming moment for me. Their surprise at the volume of kits and appreciation for our efforts and donations made all the hard work worth it. They will truly put these kits to good use!
It feels great to give these families a little relief from the immense financial burden that babies bring, so they can focus on being good parents and bonding with their child. This is a big step in the right direction to make sure infants receive the best care and start off on the right foot with the essentials.
Thank you to all who generously participated in GIVING, ADVOCATING and VOLUTEERING to help the smallest members of our community thrive!
