Mary Rhode 3 SM

Contributor: Mary Rhode, Vice President of Marketing & Communications at United Way Fox Cities

Get to know our newest staff member, Mary Rhode! She has taken over for Nanci Micke, who has retired after 18 years. We wish Nanci a very happy retirement and Mary all the best as she learns about United Way and how the work we do has a positive impact on Fox Cities residents

Q: Introduce us to your family.
Mary: My husband Chris and I have been married for almost 5 years and we have an almost 2-year-old son, Nolan, and a springer spaniel named Cabela.

Q: What do you like about working in the Fox Cities?
Mary: I love working in the Fox Cities because of the tremendous sense of community and collaborative effort that exists.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Mary: Spare time doesn’t exist much these days with a constantly on-the-go toddler at home, but when there is some, my husband and I enjoy a lot of the same activities.

  • Golfing: Golf was what my husband and I did on our first date and he even proposed to me on that same golf course, so it is an activity that we’ve enjoyed throughout our relationship. Although we don’t get out for as many rounds as we used to, we do enjoy getting on many area courses and even some close to our cabin in Hiles, WI. We have already introduced Nolan to the sport as well, although for now, I think he liked riding in the golf cart the most.
  • Skiing: We take a trip to Keystone, CO every year to get our ‘big mountain’ fix, but also enjoy traveling around WI and Upper Michigan to different ski hills.
  • Hunting: Since meeting my husband, I’ve taken up clay pigeon shooting and bird hunting. We enjoy a week-long vacation to Aberdeen, SD every October to hunt pheasants with our dog Cabela.
  • Baseball: We are 100% a baseball household. Whether it's the Brewers, Timber Rattlers or Booyah, we will cheer for them all and love going to games as a family.

Q: What does your ideal weekend (or vacation) look like?
Mary: My ideal vacation is the one we take to Keystone, CO every year. Since visiting for our honeymoon almost 5 years ago, we now have our favorite ski hill runs, places to eat and off-hill activities.

My ideal weekend would include a trip to our cabin in Hiles, WI. With VERY limited cell phone service, it’s a great place to unplug, enjoy nature, and make family memories.

Q: What is one item on your “bucket list”?
Mary: One item on my bucket list would be a golf trip to Tennessee or the Carolinas, with a night or two in Nashville. My husband and I are big-time country music fans and enjoy going to concerts. If I could add a second bucket list item, it would be a girl’s trip to Waco, TX to visit the Magnolia silos, restaurant, and shopping area. I am a massive ‘Fixer Upper’ TV show fan and love all things Magnolia.

Q: What is a quote that inspires you?
Mary: My favorite quote would be ‘all things happen for a reason’. Although this may be an often-heard or possibly overused quote, I have truly adopted this as my roadmap over the last few years. Whether it be personal situations or professional situations, I’ve been able to lean on that quote to calm me and reassure myself that the sequence of events or decisions made were for a reason and soon enough, that reason will become clear.

Q: What parts of your career, education, and/or life do you feel best prepared you for this new role?
Mary: I’ve been blessed to have had many great experiences and people throughout my professional life that I’ve learned from. That, along with my education, have prepared me well for the many tasks and responsibilities that this job will bring. Personally, being a new mom, I can certainly understand some of the struggles that may exist for those that our organization serves. I also have been impacted by the books that my child received at his doctor’s appointments courtesy of the Reach Out and Read-Fox Cities program. They have truly influenced him to have a love for reading and my husband and I know that reading is such an important part of his development.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about your new role at United Way Fox Cities?
Mary: Being just a few days into my role and still very-much learning about the services offered, I most look forward to continuing to immerse myself in all of the good that United Way does day in and day out and seeing more examples of those that have been positively affected by this organization. In marketing, storytelling is a huge part of what we do and I am excited about having the opportunity to continue the efforts of telling the community and beyond about the wonderful things happening because of United Way Fox Cities.
