Earlier this summer, United Way Fox Cities Emerging Leaders hosted a “United Way Intern Day” at Miron Construction Co., Inc. Local companies were encouraged to send a handful of interns to participate in the day and learn more about why the Fox Cities is a great place to call home.
The day’s agenda included four sessions, with topics ranging from leadership to learning to be mindful. Emerging Leaders welcomed more than 70 interns from Miller Electric Mfg. Co., Miron Construction Co., Inc., Pierce Manufacturing, Baker Tilly, SECURA Insurance Companies, U.S. Venture, and Neenah Enterprises.
Megan Biese (Miller Electric Mfg. Co.) and Vaya Kiel (Titletown Brewing Company) helped to plan the events of the day. Keep reading to get their perspectives on how the day went…
Megan: When planning Emerging Leaders’ engagement for the year we realized we were missing a touchpoint for those that are about to embark on their careers. We wanted to harness the enthusiasm and unique ideas of those in college and get them started on their philanthropic and volunteering journey.
I think we were successful in reaching our goal to connect and inspire the soon-to-be young professionals of the Fox Cities to make the community a better place to live in.
Vaya: My favorite part of the day was the panel. We had five incredible people from around the community with such diverse experiences, backgrounds, and personalities. It was such an important visual to see a panel of community leaders, not much older than the interns, making lasting and impactful change in a community they love.
Panel members for “What’s life like in the Fox Cities?” included:
- Carolyn Desrosiers, Community Engagement Manager, Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region
- Nikki Hessel, Executive Director, Future Neenah Inc.
- Mito Kudaka, Operations Coordinator, Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region
- Adriana McCleer, Community Partnerships Supervisor, Appleton Public Library
- Manny Vasquez, Vice President of Business Development for NAI Pfefferle
While many of the interns said the day was very informative and gave great perspective on the community around them, what was most important was the action that came from the day. Two of the interns wanted to keep the ‘community’ going; they wanted to have an opportunity to meet up again to build a supportive group of peers while they are in the area. Another intern, Brittany Do-McKenzie (pictured above with Vaya), didn’t want to wait until January of 2020 when she came back for her full-time position to join Emerging Leaders, so she began attending monthly committee meetings right away.
Thank you to all of the interns who attended and to the companies that lent us their interns for the day!
